Michigan Mortgage Loan Officer Definition.

The Mortgage Loan Originator Licensing Act 75 of 2009 provides for the licensing and regulation of individuals originating mortgage loans in the state of Michigan. A mortgage originator is an individual who for profit or gain takes a residential mortgage loan application and/or offers or negotiates terms of a residential mortgage loan.

When you become a loan officer in Michigan

Individuals seeking to obtain or maintain their MLO license must complete the relevant testing and education requirements.  Testing and education provider information, as well as guides on completing testing and education, can be found on the NMLS Resource Center under Professional Standards. This is not the same as becoming a mortgage broker in Michigan or obtaining a mortgage broker license.

Michigan Mortgage License Requirements

Pre-licensure Education: Prior to submission of the application, complete at least 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensure education (PE) courses which must include 2 hours of Michigan content. MCL 493.141(7)

A passing score of 75 or higher on the SAFE Mortgage Originator Test – National Component with Uniform State Content is also required in order to be eligible for a MLO license.  (Please note that test results expire after five consecutive years without  a  valid  mortgage  loan  originator  license  or  federal  registration.)
